RADIATION TREATMENT SERVICES - EXTERNAL BEAM THERAPY
Genesis CancerCare Queensland provides external beam radiation therapy at all centres, for treating a wide range of benign and cancerous conditions. We operate 11 Varian linear accelerators across the South East Queensland region including several advanced True Beam linacs and a dedicated stereotactic BrainLAB unit.
As a standard all sites are commissioned to provide:
- CT simulation scanning
- 3D treatment planning
- Standard 3D conformal radiation therapy
- Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
- Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT, RapidArc)
This range of technical capabilities ensures that patients presenting to our practices will be treated with the newest technology, using the best techniques in the most efficient manner.
In addition to our primary care services, all of our departments are aligned to provide a multidisciplinary model of care. This helps to ensure we deliver high quality, peer reviewed treatment that meets a patient's medical needs.
RADIATION TREATMENT SERVICES - BRAINLAB
BrainLAB is an advanced linac based system used to administer stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiation therapy. This state-of-the-art technology provides patients with sub-millimetre accurate treatment for small brain tumours or neurological lesions, that may be considered inoperable due to the sensitivity of the surrounding structures. Examples of conditions that BrainLAB is often used to treat include:
- Small primary brain tumours
- Metastatic brain tumours
- Pituitary Adenoma
- Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM)
- Trigeminal Neuralgia
BrainLAB offers patients a minimally invasive alternative to brain surgery with reduced recovery time that can be performed without hospitalisation. Treatment using the BrainLAB system is provided at our Wesley centre in Auchenflower, Brisbane.
RADIATION TREATMENT SERVICES – BRACHYTHERAPY
Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy
Genesis CancerCare Queensland's low dose rate brachytherapy program offers men diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer an alternative to radical surgery and external beam therapy. Low dose rate brachytherapy is an internal radiation treatment that involves the permanent placement of radioactive iodine 125 seeds into the prostate. These seeds emit low energy X-rays directly to the prostate as they decay over a period of months, thus limiting radiation exposure to surrounding tissues and organs. Consequently the treatment is extremely well tolerated with very few side effects.
Low dose rate brachytherapy is only considered suitable for men with low to intermediate risk localised prostate cancer and who satisfy certain medical requirements.
To be eligible for a Medicare rebate, patients must meet the following criteria:
- PSA equal or less than 10 at the time of diagnosis
- Gleason score equal or less than 7
- Clinical stage of cT2b or less
High Dose Rate Brachytherapy
High dose rate brachytherapy is another type of internal radiation treatment we provide for patients with prostate or gynaecological malignancies. This treatment involves the use of a single radioactive iridium 192 source that is temporarily placed inside or near a cancer site through an implanted catheter, needle or specialised applicator. The technique allows a high dose of radiation to be administered directly to a tumour while sparing surrounding tissues and organs.
High dose rate brachytherapy is often used in combination with external beam radiation therapy to manage aggressive prostate or gynaecological cancers that require a high dose of radiation to achieve a curative result. Depending on the treatment area, a minor surgical procedure and short stay in hospital may be required.
High dose rate brachytherapy is performed at our Wesley centre in Auchenflower, Brisbane.
OTHER PATIENT SERVICES - TRANSPORT
Genesis CancerCare Queensland operates a free door-to-door bus service for patients on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. This service is provided to assist patients who cannot readily access transport, attend their treatment appointments at our Tugun and Nambour centres.
Our Gold Coast bus covers areas extending from South Tweed to Southport and our Nambour bus runs along several routes covering Gympie to Caboolture and Noosa to Caloundra.
