CT SIMULATION SCANNER
In order to deliver personalised "made to measure" radiation therapy Genesis CancerCare Queensland has installed dedicated 4D CT simulation scanners at all of its sites. These scanners are used in combination with other advanced imaging techniques, to localise a patient's tumour and map surrounding structures in four dimensions (4D), the fourth dimension being time. This technology enables superior tumour targeting and visualisation of organ motion essential for administering highly conformal treatment.
RADIATION THERAPY PLANNING SOFTWARE
A key ingredient in delivering effective radiation therapy is the ability to determine how a prescribed amount of radiation can be optimally distributed within a patient's treatment site.
This process known as dosimetry, utilises powerful computers and specialised software to visualise a patients anatomy from their CT simulation data, and then construct a virtual model detailing how their radiation treatment is best applied.
At Genesis CancerCare Queensland we use a highly developed software system called Eclipse to visualise and configure treatment plans for a wide variety of cancer conditions. Read more
A linear accelerator (linac) is a sophisticated high energy X-ray machine used to deliver external beam radiation treatment to patients with benign or malignant conditions such as cancer. The linac can be used to curatively or palliatively treat most types of cancer, depending on the nature of the disease.
We operate 11 Varian linear accelerators across our 5 Queensland sites including several specialised TrueBeam linacs and a BrainLAB unit at our Wesley centre. These linacs are used to administer a range of treatment techniques such as standard conformal external beam therapy, IMRT, RapidArc (VMAT) and Stereotactic radiation therapy. Read more
In addition to our standard external beam radiation therapy service Genesis CancerCare Queensland also provide specialised stereotactic treatment using a linac-based system called BrainLAB. This service, provided at our Wesley centre was the first of its kind in Australia, combining robotic couch movement with infrared tracking and advanced kV imaging to precisely treat small brain lesions with sub-millimetre accuracy.

As part of our commitment to provide a comprehensive radiation treatment service, Genesis CancerCare Queensland offers brachytherapy for managing prostate and gynaecological cancers.
We provide low dose rate brachytherapy for prostate cancer at our Wesley and Tugun centres using Nucletron's Seed Selectron system. This equipment enables real time planning and accurate robotic placement of radioactive iodine 125 seeds into the prostate for internal radiation treatment delivery.
We also administer high dose rate brachytherapy for treating prostate and gynaecological cancers at our Wesley centre using Nucletrons HDR microSelectron. This equipment facilitates the temporary placement of an Iridium 192 source into a tumour site via surgically implanted catheters or insertion of specialised applicators.
